Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
