The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
